A steel ball weighing 100 kilograms is suspended just below the ceiling. Once an hour it is released and falls to the ground with a dull thud. The impact generates a shock wave that can be clearly felt by viewers. After hitting the ground, the ball is pulled back into position at the ceiling by a pulley system. There it hangs for a complete hour before falling to the ground once again.
