Heat Shield (Old Tjikko), 2021 | ceramics, silicate, aluminum, 485 x 115

The sculpture Heat Shield (Old Tjikko) is a 5 meters tall fire-proof protection shield, which was tailored for the world’s oldest tree – a 9.550 year-old Norway spruce located on the Fulufjället Mountain in Sweden. Von Bismarck created a protection shield that matches the size and shape of this specific tree. The sculpture’s high-tech structure, designed from ceramic-coated fibreglass, alludes to the thermal protection system of a spacecraft such as the Starship or the Space Shuttle.
