In his work Bäume ohne Grenzen (Trees Without Borders), Julius von Bismarck permanently transplants a larch native to Safiental above the local tree line, a place where no trees could grow before due to climatic conditions. The relocated tree reveals the slow reaction of nature to climate-induced environmental changes. The visible tree line today follows the actual tree line from more than 50 years ago. The standalone tree displays an invisible status quo and is simultaneously a glimpse into the future. Instead of preserving the nature of the past, von Bismarck creates a monument to a new, constantly changing nature here.
