Versuch unter Kreisen (Experiment Among Circles) is a spatial installation made up of several lamps on long cords, that swing in circular motions. The mathematically calculated, cyclical motion of the four illuminated bodies is inspired by wave patterns that occur in nature in such minute or enormous dimensions that they are generally not visible to the naked eye. Propelled by motors, the lamps’ trajectory, at first glance seems chaotic and arbitrary, slowly reveals itself as carefully pre-meditated and technically precise. The work both exploits technology and allegorises the role it plays—to reach beyond our perceptual and mental capabilities and strive for greater perfection. Versuch unter Kreisen is the outcome of Julius von Bismarck’s artistic residency by CERN – European Organization for Nuclear Research, awarded as the first recipient of a Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN in 2012.
